What Does Assisted Living Provide?

About 1 in 5 adults in the United States over the age of 85 either need or receive help with various tasks during their daily routine. This is why over 800,000 Americans have decided to move to an assisted living community to get the help they need and the care they deserve.

However, a common misconception associated with assisted living communities prevents many older adults from deciding to move and has posed the fearful idea: “I’ll lose my independence.”

This couldn’t be further from the truth! In fact, assisted living communities are designed to provide adults with the opportunity to enhance their independence.

At Village Green Senior Living, our communities in Federal Way and West Seattle, Washington, provide quality support that goes above and beyond expectations to inspire residents and promote health, safety, and wellness.

So what does assisted living provide, and how can making the move to a community help you or someone you love flourish? If you’re starting your assisted living search, look no further. Below, we share ways that assisted living can provide you or your family the support you need.

Assistance & Support with ADLs

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are the daily tasks that a person must complete independently to enjoy the best quality of life possible. ADLs are broken down into five categories, consisting of the typical tasks that the average person implements into their personal care routine:

  • Mobility: a person’s ability to move and walk independently
  • Feeding: a person’s ability to feed themselves
  • Dressing: a person’s ability to select appropriate clothing and dress themselves
  • Personal Hygiene: bathing, grooming, and maintaining dental hygiene, nail and hair care
  • Continence: the ability to get to the toilet, use it appropriately, and clean oneself

Regardless of which ADL a person needs support with, assisted living communities provide personalized care tailored to the individual’s unique needs. Assisted living can also help with things like medication management and home maintenance for those who are unable to take care of these tasks on their own.

Connection in a Community Setting

Many adults choose to age in their current homes, either because they don’t want to go through the process of downsizing or want to remain in the house they are familiar with. While both are understandable, an older adult living alone can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation and negatively impact their mental wellness.

Social isolation has become a serious epidemic among adults over the age of 65. In fact, about a fourth of adults over the age of 65 are considered to be socially isolated due to factors that are more likely to affect their age group, like:

  • Living alone
  • Hearing or vision loss
  • Living at a distance from family members
  • The loss of relatives and close friends

Moving to an assisted living community can make it easier for an individual to engage in more meaningful social interactions and develop close friendships with peers and neighbors. Due to the typical apartment-style living spaces offered in many assisted living communities, there’s an aspect of convenience that allows residents to interact with each other on a regular basis.

Thanks to the many offered activities and social events, each unique community offers many other opportunities to meet new people, enjoy spending meaningful time together participating in fun pastimes, and foster long-lasting friendships!

These communities provide residents with a range of activities and services that are designed to support their physical, emotional, and social well-being.
